While the Italians had offered little resistance, they were soon reinforced by German panzers and soldiers. British, Indian, South African, Australian, and New Zealand units had proved their mettle after dishing out defeats on the Italian Army in 1940. British and Commonwealth Troops had been engaged in deadly battles across north and eastern Africa for nearly three years by 1943.
